Abstract:

Introduction: Partial inferior turbinectomy (PIT) presents complications as postoperative bleeding, infection, crusts, synechia and pain. Several techniques aiming to improve the postoperative recovery and to decrease or avoid these complications have been described in the literature, such as nasal packing, nasal splint, Gelfoam, etc. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Merogel®, a partial ester obtained by sodium hialuronate esterification, in PIT post-operative wound healing. Methods: Two groups were randomically constituted with 10 patients each. In the first one, the biomaterial MeroGel was applied during PIT, while the second group did not receive it. A “blind” otolaringologist evaluated the wound healing by anterior rhinoscopy, based on a Visual Analogical Scale (VEA) with values ranging from 0 to 4, with 15 and 30 days after the surgery. Results: In the subjective evaluation after 15 days, the aspect of the wound healing was statistically superior when the biomaterial was used (p<0,05). However, with 30 days, the aspect was similar between groups. None of the patients presented significant bleeding that required a new surgery or new nasal packing. Conclusions: The subjective evaluation of the postoperative wound healing suggests that MeroGel accelerated the cicatrisation process in PIT.
