Abstract:

Introduction: Ageing is a normal process of all living beings. Although body instability and a tendency to fall are some of the most common geriatric problems, they cannot be considered normal characteristics of the human ageing process. Objective: This study was conceived to evaluate patients from the Elderly Outpatient Multidisciplinary Attention Group (GAMIA) of the Geriatric Service of the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de São Paulo in what regards the presence of body instability symptoms, as well as to verify their outcome in balance and life quality after orientation received in group, associated to three different physical exercises and walking training. Results: 80% of the studied elderly subjects had complaints of body balance disturbances; among them, 80% showed improvement after the orientation sections. A significant increase of the Functional Reach Test mean from 26,8 to 29,5 (p < 0,04) confirmed our good results. Conclusions: Imbalance complaints are frequent in the elderly population, even in the healthy ones. The orientation sessions associated to a minimum of physical exercises to train the vestibule ocular reflex and the somatosensorial system was very effective to control such symptoms.
